Should I concentrate on going for my most competitive keyword or on lesser easier keywords?

There are many paths to take when it comes to keyword optimization. Often your most powerful-targeted keyword is the most competitive and the most difficult to obtain. Through experience, I've found that when I work towards the #1 spot for my strongest premium keyword, many other lesser keywords follow. If your content is diverse enough, you'll pick up plenty of longtail searches along the way.

I get most of my traffic from longtail keyword searches. These keywords are easy to get and bring in highly targeted traffic. I agree with what you're saying, but think that you'll only get the longtail with the right amount of content. If your content is diverse and large, you're sure to get longtail traffic.
