Brand Vs Keywords
When to Get a Domain reflecting your BRAND:
• You're looking at a long-term web presence. If you're committed to your website, why not start off with something that will spread by word of mouth as well as from search? A good rule of thumb is to make sure that Search Engines aren't you're only source of traffic. If one path gets cut off, you need a back up. If you're deriving quality traffic from multiple sources, having a short, branded URL will be stronger than a longer generic keyword-riddled URL.
• Every good combination of keywords in your domain are taken. Don't choose a 40 character URL with hyphens just to have your keywords in the domain. First, this looks spammy even to the untrained visitor. Second, it's more difficult to remember. Third, there's more room for error when typing it in directly or setting up backlinks.
• You're confident in your marketing and promotional skills. If your product is strong, unique, and valuable, then you should have enough confidence even without the skills. If you don't have these skills, find someone who does and pay them or make a deal.
• You have a large budget for Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising & other traffic generating possibilities. This is the most expensive way to do it, but if you can manage to optimize your PPC campaigns to return positive returns in relation to your cost, it's 100% worth doing.

You can redirect your old domain to the new one, and you won't lose visitors, but if you feel people go to your old site because the original domain seems more relevant, then don't do it. Whatever you do, make sure you use a 301 redirect to preserve Link Juice and your return visitors. Use 301 (permanent) as opposed to 302 (temporary) even if it is temporary. Google does not like Temporary. Back...
